(i) Wuzu (ablution) is performedinIslam
Start bymakingniyyah (intention) to perform wudu and cleansethe self of impurities.

(ii) Saybismillah. (In the name ofGod; TheMostGracious, the Most Merciful.)

(iii) Wash the right hand up to the wrist (and betweenthe fingers) threetimes, then similarly
forthe left hand.
(iv) Rinse the mouth and spitout thewaterthreetimesand rub the teeth with amiswak or
the finger.
(v) Completelyclean the nosewith waterthreetimes.
(vi) Wash the facethreetimes.
(vii) Wash the right arm up tothe elbow threetimes; then the left arm threetimes. Pass
fingers ofonehand between the fingers ofthe other hand.
(viii)Wipe the entirehead with wet hands.
(ix) Clean the inside and outside ofthe ears with wet right and left fingers,and again with wet rightand left thumbs.
(x) Startingwith the right foot, wash both feet from the toes up to and includingtheankles thrice.
(xi) Recitethe shahadah. (xii) Offer two-rak’atprayer.

(i) Peerpressure– Students maybedeceived /influenced / compelled bytheirfriends/
peers to join in drug abuse
(ii) Financial difficulty / Poverty– students whoare not able to meet their basic needs maybetempted to follow their richer friends toabusedrugs andget somehelp from them.
(iii) Boredom– Some students abusedrugs whenevertheyfeel bored, duethe sense of
euphoria (feeling„high‟or excited)that certain drugs tend to cause

(iv) Immoral intentions– students sometimes abusedrugs in order toget thecourageto commitimmoral acts such as prostitution, rioting/ vandalism, rebellion, etc
(v) Ignorance – Some students abusedrugs simplybecause theydo not knowthe effects
/ consequences of theiractions
(vi) Curiosity – Some abusedrugs just to know howitfeels like orto „see‟what would
happen when theydo it.
(vii) The media– Several programmes/ articles / features / advertisements in themedia
(ie, radio, TV, newspapers, journals,internet, etc) influencestudents to abusedrugs
(viii) Broken/ dysfunctional homes – the lack ofadequate parental control andother problems related to broken or dysfunctional homes sometimes creates theopportunity forstudents to practicedrugabuse.
(ix) Irresponsible parenting– Students whoseparents aretoo permissiveor bad examples mayeasilydrift into substance abuse atthe least opportunity
(x) Lackofselfcontrol– Some students abusedrugs simplybecausetheyare not ableto control themselves dueto indiscipline.
(xi) Studyingpurposes– Thethinkingthat drugs canmakethemstayawake inorder to studymakes somestudents abusedrugs.
(xii) Intelligence/ retentivememory – Some students abusedrugs because theythink that itmakes them haveasharper retentive memoryormoreintelligent.

(b) Effects ofsubstanceabuse
(i) HealthProblems / Infectionsanddiseases– such as headaches, nausea,fever, cancer, high blood pressure, etc.
(ii) Loss ofrespect and dignity-forboth the abuser and his/ herfamily
(iii) Addiction– Mostdrugs are addictive, so abusers mayfind it verydifficultto stop usingthem, evenwhen theywant to
(iv) Strainedrelationships–abusers find itdifficult to relatewith others properly, since the substances usuallyaffect their minds and thewaytheyseethings
(v) Mental problems– the substances usuallyaffect their mindsorthe waytheysee things.In severe cases,the abusers become insane(mad)
(vi) Lowselfesteem– substance abusers tend to look down upon themselves
(vii) Lowreputation– the societygenerallytend to havealow regard for substance abusers
(viii) Lowproductivity– Substance abusers are usuallynot ableto work as much as they
could, due to the effect of thesubstanceon their health and thinkingfaculties
(ix) Unemployment – substance abusers can losetheirjobs either byneglect or by dismissal
(x) Riskofarrest, prosecutionandimprisonment–abusers of illicit substances stand
the risk of beingarrested,prosecutedand jailed

(xi) Educational challenges– dueto poor academicperformanceor suspension or dismissal from school

(xiii) Poverty /Financial difficulties – dueto theuse of almost all of one‟smoneyto buy
the substance and deal with thenegative effects
(xiv) Increased burdenonsociety – Mostabusers endup in thepsychiatrichospitals or on the streets as beggars / thieves / prostitutes.
(xv) Death–In extreme cases, substance abuse can lead to death
